Pittsburgh, PA
October 21, 2008

Hi folks ...

It's great to be in Pittsburgh after so many months abroad. My
Danish, Swedish, Canadian and Irish friends are the best... but for
now, my attention is turned toward all you US citizens and the coming
election...

Sarah Palin's nomination tells us what we always suspected:
Republicans really can't tell us women apart.

IN THIS ISSUE:

SING OUT THE VOTE IN OHIO!!
VOTE FOR OBAMA
DEMOCRACY NOW!
SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS
FAMILY NEWS/BIRTHDAYS

SING OUT THE VOTE OHIO

Many thanks to Holly Near for putting together an 11 day swing
through Ohio to Sing Out the Vote! I'll be joining the tour for the
last two days. If you live in Ohio, check out
http://www.hollynear.com/concerts.html for the complete schedule.
There will be shows in Kent, Columbus, Athens and Marietta before I
join the tour.

VOTE OBAMA!

I just cast my absentee ballot for Barack Obama. I wish you had been
with me at the Greyhound Station in Pittsburgh the night that Barack
Obama made his acceptance speech ... the hope he generates is real. I
pray that it is not unfounded.

His health care plan is disappointing, his enthusiasm for the war in
Afghanistan is disheartening, his vote for retroactive immunity for
the telecommunications industry was disturbing. I intend to be his
harshest critic once we elect Barack Obama to be the first
African-American President of the United States. But first we have to
elect him.

There is no question that an Obama victory gives us more
opportunities than that of a McCain presidency - or worse still, a
Palin presidency.

The millions of workers whose lives are dramatically impacted by
appointments to the NLRB, OSHA and MSHA know that there is a huge
difference between the candidates. Obama's appointments to these
posts, the federal courts, the EPA and so many other agencies will
make for a better country almost overnight.

Voting is such a tiny part of living in a participatory democracy...
but it's still important. PLEASE VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA.

It's stunning that our expensive electoral extravaganza accomplishes
over 3 years the same thing that Canadians achieve in 5 weeks at a
fraction of the cost. Publicly financed elections are the way to go!

DEMOCRACY NOW!

In the last couple weeks Amy Goodman has played two of my recordings
on Democracy Now! - "We Do the Work," (Jon Fromer's wonderful
composition that appears on my "Union Maid" CD), and "Rich Man's
House" (the Kensington Welfare Rights Union anthem that I recorded
with Kim and Reggie Harris, Jon Fromer and Rebel Voices on my 2001 CD
- "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?" -- both available at CDBaby or
as digital downloads from CDBaby, Itunes and lots of other online
music sources).

I got to hear Amy speak at the 5th Annual Gandhi-King Peace
Conference. She was powerful and inspiring as always. If you don't
get Democracy Now! on your cable channel, complain! But you can
always stream this essential news broadcast at
http://democracynow.org

SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS WATCH

This annual event is near and dear to my heart. If you've never
checked out what's going on with your tax dollars, and in your name...
please visit http://soaw.org

Roy Bourgeois of SOAWatch also spoke at the Gandhi-King Conference in
Memphis last week. His powerful testimony about our very own
terrorist training camp would convince anyone who listens.

This is another place where Obama vs. McCain is crystal-clear. We
can CLOSE THE SOA forever with your help!
